Sharing:
Week of 11/05: Your favorite Kevin Henkes book
Week of 11/12: Something you are thankful for
Preparation Tips:
1. Start with your topic sentence to tell your audience what you're going to share about..
2. Add 2 or 3 sentences to describe your topic. Use transition words such as first, next, last.
3. Stand up straight, look at your audience, and speak clearly.
Something extra: Bring the book to show your audience!
Book Bags:
Please remember to return the bag on Thursdays. If you have any questions, please contact your family room teacher.
Language Arts:
This week we concluded our Kevin Henkes author study. We ended the unit with a few stories about Lilly, one of our favorite characters. Students wrote stories about an important day in their life. To help prepare for sharing, we made a class book of our favorite Kevin Henkes stories.
Please check out some books from the library written by Kevin Henkes and/or visit the website: www.kevinhenkes.com
Teammate of the Week:
We started a new program this week. Each student in our village will have a chance to be "Teammate of the Week". This is a great opportunity for students to share information about themselves with their family rooms. As students learn about the Teammate of the Week, they will be writing an expository paragraph using Step Up to Writing Program. We will be keeping the writing at school to create a book for each child. Not only is this a wonderful memory of our classmates, but a great writing portfolio too.
Math:
This week we continued our Time and Calendar strand. This is an important and useful strand that is easy to bring up in everyday conversation. Talk with your child about weekly and daily routines to reinforce the concepts. Many of our kids still don't know what time they get up or go to bed. You can help reinforcing by talking about the following things at home:
- morning, afternoon, evening
- yesterday, today, tomorrow
- breakfast, lunch, dinner
- days of the week
- months of the year
- seasons
- hour, minute, second
- digital and analog clocks
- elapsed time (How much time between lunch and dinner?)
We practiced our new Megaskill word: PROBLEM SOLVING
Talk about solutions to everyday problems in your house. For example: What do you do when you can't find your jacket?
This week we learned about two holidays: Halloween and El dia de los Muertos. Ask your child if he/she remembers any important facts about these two holidays. Next week we will learn more about Diwali and Veteran's Day.
NOTE: Next Wed. we will have a special presentation about Diwali. If your child has special clothes that they would like to wear, they may wear their traditional clothes to school on Wed. Please make sure they have tennis shoes for P.E.
Other:
It was great seeing so many students and parents at the Halloween parade and lunch on the lawn on Tuesday.
Don't forget: Willow Street Pizza on Monday, November 5th!
This is a great way to meet parents and students in our village. We hope to see you there.
